MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, Venezuela's opposition representatives from Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) coalition submitted the collected signatures to country's National Electoral Council (CNE).
The Venezuelan El Nacional newspaper reported Tuesday, citing MUD's Jesus Torrealba, who participated in the meeting with the CNE, that the committee declared over 1.3 million signatures as valid.
The newspaper added that country's opposition was planning to launch the process of resignation referendum, as they had collected six times more signatures than necessary for the move.
Venezuela has been in political turmoil since the election of a new opposition-controlled parliament in January. In mid-March, MUD approved the first reading of a draft law on holding a recall referendum to oust Maduro. Public support for the president has also dropped to record lows.
Venezuela has been facing significant economic problems as falling oil prices strained its budget amid high inflation and shortages.
