The biggest challenge facing Republicans in the 2016 US general election is having the controversial billionaire Donald Trump at the top of the party’s ticket, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, Congressman Xavier Becerra told Sputnik on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik), Leandra Bernstein — In the past week, Trump has come under intense scrutiny for questioning the impartiality of US federal judge Gonzalo Curiel due to his Mexican heritage. Curiel is presiding over a fraud case involving Trump University. The comments raised questions about Trump’s appeal to a broader electorate in November.

"The biggest problem I think Republicans will have with Donald Trump — is Donald Trump," Becerra said when asked about main liability his rival party will face in the November election.

Becerra, who is also a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, questioned whether Trump will "retract his racist statements and appeal to Americans, whatever their stripe."

Becerra argued that Trump’s "racist comments" go beyond targeting Latinos, and include "his vulgar mocking of Americans with disabilities, his name-calling of women, his offensive references to African-Americans, you name it."

"I suspect by the time we get to November, he will have included other important Americans."

In the past week, a number of top Republican Party figures, including Speaker of the House of Representatives Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have distanced themselves from their party’s presumptive nominee. The latest national polling average shows Trump trailing Clinton by about a 4 percent margin.
