MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to Wallstrom, the UK's referendum on whether to stay in the European Union could also provoke some European countries to ask Brussels for special status within the bloc.
"The spill-over effect will be unfortunately felt, deeply felt. It would be bad either way… That might affect other EU member states that will say: 'Well if they can leave, maybe we should also have referendums and maybe we should also leave," Wallstrom told the BBC's This Week's World program on Saturday.
UK citizens are set to vote on June 23 in a referendum on the country's EU membership, after British Prime Minister David Cameron and the leaders of the 27 other EU member states reached a deal in February to grant the United Kingdom a special status within the bloc.
