As America wakes up to yet another mass-shooting, Orlando police have identified Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old from Fort Pierce, Florida, as the man responsible for the latest outrage to American society.
According to ABC News, Mateen had long been on the police's "radar." In an interview with NBC News, Mateen's father Mir Seddique claimed that his son became "angry" after witnessing two men kissing a few months ago. Mateen's father believes this is the trigger which set off the chain of events leading to today's tragic shooting.
He said: "We are saying we are apologizing for the whole incident. We weren't aware of any action he is taking. We are in shock like the whole country."
Police officers in Orlando, Florida said that Mateen had received weapons training, although at this stage it is not clear whether he received this training in the US or elsewhere.
Mateen was killed by a SWAT team while holding hostages in the nightclub. During his shooting spree he killed 50 and wounded another 53 people.
