WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US-Russian brokered ceasefire entered into force on ceasefire agreement came into force across Syria on February 27. Terrorist organizations such the Daesh and al-Nusra Front are excluded from the truce.
"We presented proposals to the Russian side designed to reinforce the cessation of hostilities in those specific areas north-west of Aleppo, and we are looking to see if Moscow can be responsive to those proposals," Toner said. "If did we have an effective cessation of hostilities in north-west Aleppo, then it would allow the regime and Russia to realign their forces to attack Nusra in regions where Nusra actually controls territory."
Earlier this month, Washington asked Moscow to direct its airstrikes solely at al-Nusra Front and refrain from targeting so-called "moderate" rebels, working with al-Qaeda's branch in Syria.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged the US earlier this month to convince those rebel groups which they support in Syria to leave areas where al-Nusra Front militants are present.
