GENEVA (Sputnik) — Swiss Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter urged all UN nations on Monday to put human rights at the heart of conflict prevention, in a speech marking a decade since the creation of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
"We call for a strengthening of the links between human rights, development and peace and security. We issue a call to bring these pillars of the UN closer together and to improve the links between Geneva and New York – between human rights and security," Burkhalter said.
The head of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs proposed enhancing cooperation between the Human Rights Council and the Security Council; improving data exchange between them through regular briefings by the High Commissioner for Human Rights; and asking all UN member states to pay more attention to human rights in their conflict prevention activities.
