French Police Prevents Clashes of Football Fans From Russia, Wales, England

French police prevented clashes between fans from Russia, Wales and England in the heart of France’s city of Lille, a R-Sport correspondent reported.

LILLE (Sputnik) – Police detained several individuals, however, there is currently no specific information about their nationalities.

Lille is set to host a Russia-Slovakia football match on Wednesday within the framework of the Euro-2016 tournament.

According to the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region’s Prefect Michel Lalande, the French city expects some 15,000 Russian fans to arrive for the match.

At the same time, there will be around 50,000 British nationals in the region on occasion of an England-Wales game scheduled to be held in the nearby town of Lens on Thursday, Lalande said.

On June 11, the Russian national football team played in a draw with England's team in the French city of Marseille. After the match, the clashes between dozens of Russian and English fans erupted at the stadium. As a result, two Russian and six English nationals were detained after the scuffles.

Earlier on Tuesday, UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body decided to hand the Russian Football Union (RFU) a 150,000-euro ($168,000 at the current exchange rates) fine and a suspended disqualification following the Saturday crowd disturbances.
