MOSCOW (Sputnik) — In May, the expedition arrived on Matua Island to examine Japanese fortifications built there during World War II for the presence of chemical laboratories that allegedly were used to produce poisonous gas in the 1940s.
"The joint Russian Defense Ministry and Russian Geographical Society expedition inspected the fortifications for the presence of Japanese chemical laboratories for the production of toxic substances within them. The results [of the inspections] showed that there are no warehouses, laboratories, storage or manufacturing facilities for producing chemical, toxic, or bacteriological agents on Matua Island. No substances or agents that are hazardous to human activity were found," Gordeev said.
At the moment, Russia is constructing several military facilities on the Kuril Islands. According to the Russian Federal Agency for Special Construction, Russia expects to build a total of 163 buildings and 94 structures on the Kurils Islands.
