The Council of Europe has prepared a new international agreement aimed at the promotion of safety at football matches and other sports events, the international organization's said on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The ongoing UEFA Euro 2016 championship in France, has already seen several waves of violence in different cities across the country, as football fans of various countries clash with each other. The scuffles peaked on Saturday, as Russian and English fans clashed ahead of the match between their national teams at the Velodrome stadium in the French city of Marseille and after it.

"The Council of Europe has drafted a new international treaty to promote safety at football matches and other sports events and improve international police co-operation. The new convention foresees better information and data sharing between police forces and exchange of best practices… The Council of Europe plans to open the convention for signature to European states on 3 July at the Stade de France," the continent's leading human rights organization said in a statement.

The drafted convention is aimed at the provision of all the required security measures at the stadiums and comfort for all the spectators attending the events, the statement added.

Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland condemned clashes in Marseille and called on European governments to prevent this kind of violence.
