MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The IAAF upheld the suspension of ARAF’s membership on Friday, virtually banning Russian athletes from the 2016 Rio Olympics. Russia vowed to file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
"We will decide on an appeal tomorrow after selecting lawyers," Butov told R-Sport. "The [IAAF] decision needs additional clarification on many points. I filed a request with the IAAF yesterday. No one has actually seen the document [IAAF ruling] yet."
The ARAF secretary general said he needed to see the official IAAF papers on the suspension of the Russian athletics federation to determine if there was any chance of winning a legal battle against IAAF.
"There probably is," Butov said. "But details are of essence. We will try to make up our mind tomorrow evening."
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is scheduled to hold an emergency summit next Tuesday in Lausanne, Switzerland, to discuss how Russia’s suspension over doping allegations will affect clean athletes.
