MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Over 43,000 people have signed a petition calling for cancellation of the national referendum on United Kingdom's continued membership in the European Union.

The petition, addressed to the UK government is published on the Parliament's website. If the petition gets 100,000 signatures, the issue will be considered for debate in the Parliament.

According to The Independent newspaper, the petition has surged in support after the murder of UK Labour Party lawmaker Jo Cox on Thursday. On Saturday alone, over 20,000 people signed the petition, which is likely to get 100,000 signatures before the referendum day, according to the media outlet.

Jo Cox, 41, a pro-remain campaigner was shot and stabbed in the street on Thursday as she held a regular meeting with her constituency in West Yorkshire, a week before the United Kingdom is scheduled to vote in a referendum on whether it should stay in or leave the European Union.
