TOULOUSE (Sputnik) — Russia had its hopes of progressing in the tournament dashed 0:3 by Wales in Toulouse, France after drawing with England and losing to Slovakia.
"I’d like to apologize for our leaving Euro in such a dishonorable fashion," Slutsky told reporters. "We were lacking a lot, so I want to tell our fans I am sorry that we couldn’t show determination and mastery."
Slutsky said he was ready to stand down as the head coach of the national football team. "I think we need a new coach and it is up to the Football Union to decide what else."
The 45-year-old suggested that his own mistakes must have prevented the team from achieving better results at the tournament. He said he was ready to take all the blame for the defeat.
