UK Green Party Head Says London to Lose Much in Case of Brexit

LONDON (Sputnik) — Leader of the Green Party of England and Wales Natalie Bennett told Sputnik the United Kingdom had much to lose in case of the country's exit from the European Union.

"We believe we flourish best [when] we work together towards all the problems that we face. And we also celebrate free movement within the EU, we think that enriches all of our lives… If we left the EU what would we have to do? I think what we have to do is write a very long list of all the protections that we would lose [in case of Brexit]," Bennett said.

She added that the United Kingdom should maintain the measures that the European Union could provide for protection of the environment.

Natalie Bennett says that broad discussions on the possible UK exit from the European Union are "simply missing" in the campaign to preserve UK membership in the union.

"The nature of the campaign that really hasn't canvassed issues very broadly, has been allowed to fall into two very narrow arguments: one about immigration… and one about the economy that just simply has not worked, because people just don't believe the economists… And so the much broader debate is simply missing from the mainstream media," Bennett said, answering a question about her dissatisfaction with the way the campaign to remain in the 28-nation bloc was going.

Bennett added that she was skeptical about the campaign to remain in the European Union initiated by government, because it had been a "Tory leadership contest."

UK nationals will vote on Thursday in a referendum on the country's EU membership, after Prime Minister David Cameron and the leaders of the 27 EU member states agreed in February to grant the United Kingdom a special status within the bloc.
