08:01 GMT 21.06.2016 (Updated: 15:27 GMT 28.05.2023) About 11 percent more of UK voters would be more likely to support Prime Minister David Cameron’s campaign to remain in the European Union in the upcoming referendum on the issue if he made a promise to block Turkey from joining the bloc, a poll revealed Tuesday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Eleven percent said they were more likely to support the Remain campaign if guaranteed no Turkey accession, the LBC broadcaster's poll with YouGov revealed. Five percent of those who planned to vote in favor of leaving the bloc said they would be prepared to vote otherwise if Cameron made such a promise.
According to the LBC, this could set the outcome of the referendum in favor of the Remain campaign.
UK nationals will vote on Thursday in a referendum on the country's EU membership, after Cameron and the leaders of the 27 EU member states agreed in February to grant the United Kingdom a special status within the bloc.
The prime minister has been reluctant to respond to whether he would use his right to veto Turkish accession.
