MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The legislation seeks to change the anti-terror laws that were adopted two years ago. April’s amendments initially requested that only cellphone operators store users’ messages.
Now the bill, which was authored by lower-house Security Committee chief Irina Yarovaya, wants Internet service providers to store clients' data for six months, according to the Vedomosti newspaper.
Internet firms will also be required to provide authorities with encryption keys which are needed to decipher encrypted data, or face a fine of up to 1 million rubles (over $15,000) for legal entities.
