BEIJING (Sputnik) — On Thursday, voters across the United Kingdom are taking part in a historic referendum to decide whether or not the country should withdraw from the European Union. The referendum was scheduled after UK Prime Minister David Cameron and the leaders of the 27 EU member states agreed in February to grant the United Kingdom a special status within the bloc.
"We have been following the referendum with great attention. We respect the choice of UK people. The Chinese side has always supported the EU integration processes and wants to see a unified, strong and stable Europe that would play an important role on the international arena," Hua Chunying said at a briefing, commenting on the UK referendum.
According to the latest poll conducted by Ipsos MORI, 52 percent of the UK nationals are in favor of remaining within the European bloc, while 48 percent are against such a scenario.
