US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon had constructive discussions with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in Caracas, but more work needs to be done on improving bilateral relations, US Department of State spokesperson John Kirby said in a briefing on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Shannon met with Maduro, Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez, civil society groups and opposition figures to discuss Venezuela's challenges and foster dialogue across the political spectrum, Kirby noted.

"The Under Secretary felt he had good discussions, constructive discussions [with Maduro]," Kirby stated. "There’s more work to be done in our bilateral relationship."

The United States, the spokesperson added, is optimistic that Washington and Caracas can continue to work on that relationship amid the country's political issues and economic troubles.

Earlier in June, Maduro said he was ready to restore relations with the United States and appoint a new ambassador to Washington.

Public support for Maduro has dropped to record low levels after falling oil prices strained oil-rich Venezuela’s budget and sparked high inflation and shortages of goods.
