Modi Urges China to Make Objective Assessment of India’s NSG Bid

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to make a fair and objective assessment of India’s application and judge it on its own merit.

Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Taskhent on Thursday.

The agenda of the meeting was dominated by India’s bid for the NSG as Modi asked for Chinese support during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“Prime Minister Modi met President Xi Jinping of China on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tashkent today. President Xi welcomed India’s accession to the SCO and said it would strengthen it. Prime Minister Modi thanked President Xi for China’s support to India’s membership in the SCO,” Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Vikas Swarup said.

Vikas Swarup further added that, “Prime Minister Modi then spoke of the NSG Plenary Meeting in Seoul which is to discuss India’s membership in the NSG. In fact the rest of the meeting was devoted to this issue. PM Modi urged China to make a fair and objective assessment of India’s application and judge it on its own merit. He said China should contribute to the emerging consensus in Seoul.”

The Indian prime minister is on a two-day visit to attend the annual summit of the SCO. Modi on Thursday also met with President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov.

“The PM thanked President Karimov for support to India’s membership in the SCO. Both leaders recalled old historical connections and discussed ways to further expand and strengthen relations. The PM conveyed a decision to extend e-tourist visa to Uzbekistan to mark 25 years of Uzbekistan’s independence and the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with India,” Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said in a statement.
