WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Thursday suggested that UK politicians supporting the country's continued membership in the EU, including Prime Minister David Cameron, have a pro-US agenda to stay in the bloc to prevent its further integration to rival NATO.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — UK voted in a referendum to determine whether or not the United Kingdom should leave the European Union. Cameron has led the pro-Remain campaign despite initiating the referendum.

"Cameron, Osborne and Hague…These transatlanticists have the view that the UK is useful to prevent European integration, that it prevents the creation of a European army," Assange said during a live broadcast on the Brexit Club website.

The discussion, broadcast from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London where Assange resides, centers around the ongoing Brexit referendum, its context and repercussions.

The United Kingdom can be used to keep the financing of EU institutions down, including a unified EU military and external diplomatic services, Assange stressed.

Rhetoric of Brexit Debate Bordered on Xenophobic – Scottish Tory

"Tory transatlanticists believe that they need to keep the UK in the EU so UK businesses can penetrate the continent, but also to prevent the European integration which would be a challenge to NATO and a challenge to the United States."

The WikiLeaks founder noted that the standoff within Conservative party ranks on the Brexit issue has reached critical levels, and a Labour government led by Jeremy Corbyn is likely to be formed after the next UK election.

Polling stations across the United Kingdom stay open from 7:00 a.m. (06:00 GMT) through 10:00 p.m. local time (21:00 GMT). There is no threshold for turnout, and there will be no exit polls.

Brexit supporters argue that EU membership has diminished the country’s independence to legislate, direct its economy and control its borders. Opponents warn that leaving the bloc could severely harm the UK economy.
