BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.
"It is expected that the [UK exit] application would be filed in mid-October. It will be probably done by the new prime minister of the United Kingdom. Juncker is expected to appoint a European commissioner to process the Brexit afterward," the source said.
The source confirmed the EU treaty's Article 50 provision envisioning a two-year "divorce" procedure.
