Latvian Foreign Ministry Expresses Regret Over Brexit Referendum Results
09:05 GMT 24.06.2016 (Updated: 15:27 GMT 28.05.2023) The Latvian Foreign Ministry expressed regret on Friday over Britain's decision to exit the European Union, the ministry's press service said in a statement.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs regrets the outcome of the United Kingdom's European Union membership referendum," the statement said.
The statement added that London would remain Riga's significant ally and international partner and the two countries would preserve bilateral ties in foreign affairs and security policy.
According to the statement, the sides should start negotiations on the issue of the UK withdrawal from the 28-nation bloc and on the model of future relationship.
