Secretary of State for Scotland David Mundell on Friday urged to abstain from "pushing personal or political agendas" in the wake of UK Prime Minister David Cameron's plans to resign following the UK decision to leave the European Union.

TURNBERRY (Sputnik) — On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a referendum on its membership of the bloc. Earlier on Friday, it was announced that 51.9 percent of people supported the move to leave the bloc. Cameron, a staunch supporter of the country retaining its EU membership, announced he would be resigning by October.

"David Cameron has been a great leader of my Party and of our country. Today he has once again put country before self. The United Kingdom has fundamental strengths and this is a time for calmness and deliberation – not pushing other personal or political agendas," Mundell said.

According to Mundell, earlier in the day he offered to hold a meeting with the Scottish Government in Edinburgh to "discuss next steps," while Cameron has already spoken to Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

A new prime minister of the United Kingdom could assume office by the start of the UK Conservative Party congress in October, Cameron said earlier in the day.
