MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a referendum on its membership of the European Union. Earlier on Friday, it was announced that 51.9 percent of people supported the motion to leave the bloc.
"The disillusionment with European integration and declining trust in the EU can be observed in some member states and is something we must counteract by bringing the Union closer to the citizens," the ministry said, adding that Poland respects the will of the UK public expressed in the referendum and that London will remain an important partner for Warsaw.
According to the statement, the Brexit referendum results do not bring into question the European project, although the European Union needs to be reformed to decrease bureaucracy and to increase the democratic legitimacy of its decisions.
