BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit. In order to start the withdrawal from the 28-nation bloc, London should submit an application to launch the two-year negotiation process.
"Maybe from the UK there is the position that they will prolong the situation [by not sending the application] for months,… but I would like, I prefer to… speed up this process," Zaoralek told reporters.
He added that he expects London to submit the relevant application within two weeks.
Within the framework of the EU legislation, if a country wants to leave the European Union it must submit an application which sets in train a two-year negotiating period to discuss all the details of the future relations between the country and the bloc. Until all the issues have been agreed, the country will remain a member of the European Union and will have to adhere to its rules and regulations.
