Spain's Losses Due to Anti-Russia Sanctions, Countermeasures Near $800Mln
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Spanish conservative People's Party (PP) considers Russia to a be a friend of Spain and wants relations between the countries to return to normal, Jose Ramon Garcia-Hernandez, the party's head of international relations, told Sputnik on Saturday.

"Russia is a friend of Spain and we want our relationship to return to normal as soon as possible," Garcia-Hernandez said.

Spain will, however, accept decisions made by the European Union in regard to anti-Russia sanctions, he added.

The comment comes ahead of Sunday's snap general election, where PP will contest with Podemos and the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). The party gained most votes in last year's election, but failed to gain a sufficient number of votes to form a government.

Spain to Continue to Support Anti-Russia Sanctions Even If Socialists Win
Earlier in June, Russian Ambassador to Spain Yuri Korchagin told Sputnik that Spain's losses due to EU anti-Russian sanctions and Moscow's retaliatory measures have amounted to some 700 million euros (almost $794 million) so far.

Moscow's relations with the West deteriorated in 2014 over the Ukrainian crisis, when the European Union along with the United States and some other countries imposed several rounds of sanctions against Russia, accusing it of meddling in Ukrainian internal affairs, a claim which Moscow has repeatedly denied.

The latest round of Western punitive measures against Russia is up for extension among EU members before the July 31 expiration deadline.
