MOSCOW (Sputnik) — European Commissioner on Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union Jonathan Hill resigned following Brexit, he said in a statement on the European Commission website on Saturday.
"As we move to a new phase, I don't believe it is right that I should carry on as the British Commissioner as though nothing had happened. In line with what I discussed with the President of the Commission some weeks ago, I have therefore told him that I shall stand down," Hill said in a statement.
On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.
