MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Britain voted on Thursday to drop out of the European Union. Senior Labour members accused the party leader of running a lackluster campaign to keep the country in and called for a change of leadership.
"It is increasingly clear that your position is untenable and that you are unable to command the support of the Shadow Cabinet, the Parliamentary Labour Party and, most importantly, the country," Powell wrote in a letter to Corbyn posted on Twitter.
The resignation came in quick succession after shadow transport secretary Lilian Greenwood, shadow Scottish Secretary Ian Murray and shadow health secretary Heidi Alexander, who all stood down earlier today.
The mass exit comes hours after Jeremy Corbyn announced he had fired shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn, saying he had lost confidence in the lawmaker.
