MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The UK Conservative Party Human Rights Commission is concerned by China's recent crackdown on human rights and urges the UK government to reconsider its relations with Beijing, The Telegraph newspaper said Monday, citing a yet-to-be released report by the body.
China has shown "a very grave deterioration in the human rights situation over the past three years," it was claimed in the report as cited by The Telegraph, adding that the Commission "is deeply concerned about the UK Government’s decision to develop a friendship with the government of the People’s Republic of China."
According to the newspaper, the Commission's report, which is due to be released later in the week, calls for a change in UK policy toward China, as it found current bilateral relations are not based on "appropriately critical friendship."
The report, titled "The Darkest Moment: The Crackdown on Human Rights in China 2013-2016," will be presented by former Governor of Hong Kong Lord Patten, according to the news outlet.
The report will contain evidence of the use of torture in China's treatment of human rights lawyers and the crackdown on freedom of expression.
