MOSCOW (Sputnik) – German and France are bearing a special responsibility for keeping and protecting the European unity, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday.
"Germany has a special interest in success of the European unity. Germany together with France are bearing a special historic responsibility… to keep and protect the European unity," Merkel said in an address to the German parliament.
She added that Germany would always be committed to the idea of the European unity.
The remarks of the German chancellor come in the wake of Thursday's referendum in the United Kingdom to determine whether the country should stay or leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.
