MOSCOW (Sputnik) — US President Barack Obama warned the international community to abstain from “hysteria” over the decision by UK voters for Britain to withdraw from the European Union.
“There’s been a little bit of hysteria post-Brexit vote, as if somehow NATO’s gone, the trans-Atlantic alliance is dissolving, and every country is rushing off to its own corner. That’s not what’s happening,” Obama told the NPR media network in an interview released Tuesday.
On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron said Monday that the Britain will remain a part of NATO, as well as a member of the UN Security Council, the Groups of Seven (G7) and the Group of Twenty (G20) despite the fact that the nation has voted to leave the European Union.
