MOSCOW (Sputnik) — UK Work and Pensions Secretary Stephen Crabb on Tuesday announced his candidacy to replace resigned Prime Minister David Cameron in a letter to the Consevative Party’s lawmakers, local media reported, citing sources.
According to the Politico news website, as well as former London Mayor Boris Johnson, Crabb’s main rival for the Consevative Party’s leadership is likely to be Home Secretary Theresa May.
Nominations for the prime minister’s candidacy will be open Wednesday to mid-Thursday.
Prime Minister David Cameron, who led the Remain campaign in the country’s vote on leaving or staying in the European Union, announced his resignation after the nation decided to leave the bloc in a referendum on Thursday. He is expected to step down in October, while the new prime minister is set to be elected in September.
