"Our partners in the European Union are genuinely sad that we are planning to leave this organization… But there were very constructive discussions, they were very positive, they were very calm… that Britain should seek and Europe should seek the closest possible relations… There was a lot of reassurance that until Britain leaves, Britain is a full-fledged member of this organization and so is entitled to all of the benefits of membership and full participation till the point of which we leave," Cameron said at a press conference in Brussels adding that the current EU summit is the last for him as for the prime minister.
According to Cameron, the United Kingdom has the sovereign right to inform the European Union on exit from bloc, when London decides to do that and when it is necessary.
The UK prime minister stressed that only the UK people had the right to choose the direction of the country's development and that the decision to leave the European Union was not a matter of the country's government or parliament.
