GENEVA (Sputnik) — Ecuador is disappointed at the UK's decision not to follow UN's WGAD ruling, a move that reflects a double standards policy, disapproved by Quito, Long told reporters in Geneva, on the sidelines of a Human Rights Council session.
A UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) ruled in February that Assange was "arbitrarily detained" in London and should be released. The United Kingdom and Sweden defied this decision. London has reiterated that Assange would be arrested in case he left the embassy.
In May, the Stockholm court upheld the arrest warrant for Assange suspected of sexual assault in Sweden. The lawyers said they would file an appeal against the verdict.
He has been residing at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London since 2012 out of fear of being extradited, first to Sweden where on charges of sexual assault, and then to the United States where he could face espionage charges for publishing secret documents through his website WikiLeaks.
