Pena Nieto was joined at the press conference by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US President Barack Obama after conducting the North American Leaders’ Summit in Ottawa.
"During this trilateral summit, the governments of Canada, the United States and Mexico, we have reaffirmed our decision to work together with a vision, with resolve, to advance economic integration in North America," Pena Nieto stated. "In the Trans-Pacific Partnership there is a great opportunity to reaffirm this level of integration… between the three countries that are part of NAFTA [North American Free Trade Agreement]."
In October, 12 countries of the Pacific Rim region, including Canada, Mexico and the United States, reached an agreement on the TPP free trade deal, intended to deregulate trade among the signatories, which together make up some 40 percent of the world economy. The deal has yet to be ratified by the signatory countries.
The TPP is highly supported by Obama and his administration. However, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has also called for rejecting the free trade deal.
