Ex-Shadow Work, Pensions Secretary to Launch Labour Leadership Campaign
10:36 GMT 30.06.2016 (Updated: 15:28 GMT 28.05.2023) Former Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Owen Smith is planning to challenge Jeremy Corbyn as Labour Party leader, The Guardian reported Thursday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — In a referendum last week, the UK electorate supported a motion to leave the European Union. Following the referendum, Corbyn lost a vote of no confidence among parliamentary members of the party, which had been preceded by the mass resignation of his shadow cabinet in protest over Brexit.
According to The Guardian newspaper, Smith could become a contender for the top spot in the party, judging him to have greater prospects of winning the anticipated leadership race than Angela Eagle, who has also announced her decision to challenge Corbyn.
The newspaper cited its own sources as saying that Eagle planned to meet with Smith to give the party a chance to agree on a single candidate to take on Corbyn.
On June 23, a nationwide referendum was held in the United Kingdom, in which 51.9 percent of voters supported the country withdrawing from the European Union.
A divide has been widening in the United Kingdom’s main opposition party since hard-leftist Corbyn was elected to fill the job abandoned by Ed Miliband after his defeat at May 2015 general election.
