Too Early to Discuss Resumption of Turkish Stream Project - Kremlin
It is too early to discuss the resumption of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline while current discussions, including on the project’s routes, are ongoing at the framework level, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Earlier, Russia's energy giant Gazprom said it is ready to resume talks with Ankara on construction of an underwater gas pipeline under the Turkish Stream project.
"So far it is probably premature to speak [on the resumption]. You know there are various letters of intent signed by Gazprom in Italy a few months ago. Various other routes are being discussed within the framework format. It is too early to say which routes will be specified and will enter the implementation stage," Peskov told reporters.
On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The leaders
agreed to restore bilateral relations, inluding in the spheres of trade and tourism.
Moscow suspended a number of strategic bilateral projects, including negotiations on the Turkish Stream project following the downing of a Russian Su-24 aircraft by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet in Syria on November 24.
The pipeline was expected to run below the Black Sea from Russia to Turkey and continue to a hub on the Turkish-Greek border, from where gas could be transferred to Southern Europe.
