Head of Peruvian State Petroleum Company Resigns After Oil Leak Incident
German Velasquez, head of the Petroperu Peruvian state petroleum company, filed resignation Thursday because of a recent oil leak incident, local media reported citing country’s Energy Minister Rosa Maria Ortiz.
MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — Ortiz announced the resignation of Velasquez adding that the incident may have been caused by unauthorized oil pumping.
“That is a very serious fault and irrespective of the resignation of Velasquez those responsible for revealing, who ordered the pumping, will be appointed,” she said as quoted by El Commercio media outlet.
The incident occurred at the Nor Peruano pipeline in the Amazon region of Loreto on June 24 with 600 barrels of oil spilled.
