MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he accepted his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto’s proposal to develop aviation security measures in the Baltic region.
Flight transponders are used in aviation to identify planes from the ground.
"In case of NATO countries are reciprocally ready to conduct their air force flights near Russian borders with transponders enabled, Russian Defense Ministry experts may take part in a detailed discussion of this issue at an a expert level," the ministry said in a statement.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has given orders to devise a system of mutual confidence-building measures that will increase military aviation safety in the Baltic, the ministry added, noting that these measures include the use of transponders by Russian military jets.
