LONDON (Sputnik) — The United Kingdom will be able to guarantee the right to remain for EU citizens after Brexit only if the bloc adopts similar measures for British nationals, UK Immigration Minister James Brokenshire said Monday.
"It's been suggested that the government could now fully guarantee EU nationals living in the UK the right to stay. This would be unwise without a parallel assurance from European governments regarding British nationals living in their countries," Brokenshire said, speaking in the UK Parliament.
The minister stressed there would be no immediate change to EU citizens' status, adding that they would continue to be welcome in the United Kingdom.
On June 23, a nationwide referendum was held in the United Kingdom, in which 51.9 percent of voters supported the country leaving the bloc.
