MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Douglas Carswell, the UK Independence Party (UKIP)’s first and only member of parliament, on Monday ruled out the possibility of standing in the UKIP leadership election after the current party leader resigned from the post.
Nigel Farage announced his resignation earlier in the day, saying he had achieved his goal of getting Britain out of the European Union in the June 23 referendum.
He explained that he could not be "a constituency member of parliament, represent UKIP in the House of Commons, be a dad and lead a party."
Steven Woolfe, UKIP’s migration and financial affairs spokesman, tweeted earlier that he regarded Farage as a "great leader" who changed Britain for the better. He is touted as one of the potential leadership candidates, alongside UKIP deputy leader Paul Nuttall.
