UK Must Decide on Format of Future Relations With EU – Merkel
12:38 GMT 05.07.2016 (Updated: 15:28 GMT 28.05.2023) German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday it was up to the United Kingdom to decide on the format of its future relations with the European Union.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The United Kingdom voted by 52 percent to 48 percent to leave the European Union in the June 23 referendum.
"The shaping of various parameters regarding UK’s future relations with the EU – Britain must first figure that out itself and then file for EU exit in line with Article 50 of the EU treaty," Merkel stated at a press conference in Berlin.
"We cannot think four steps ahead. We will see what happens in Britain next and when Britain files this application – a lot will depend on this," the chancellor continued.
Brussels has asked London not to stall with the official exit process to avoid political and economic fallout. EU leaders warned there would be no official talks before Brexit was finalized.
