WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Tuesday, FBI Director James Comey announced that no charges would be brought against Hillary Clinton for her use of a private server and email address for official business while serving as secretary of state.
"The [FBI] claim about a lax environment or culture [at the State Department] when it comes to handling classified information… we don’t share that assessment," Kirby stated.
However, Comey said the investigation did find that the State Department had a culture that did not encourage careful handling of classified information.
Although the State Department is always looking for ways to improve, Kirby noted, the department takes its obligation to protect sensitive information very seriously.
Clinton has come under significant criticism for using a private server and email address for official business against established rules and procedures during her tenure as secretary of state from 2009 until 2013.
The FBI opened a criminal investigation into whether Clinton intended to break US law by establishing a private communication system.
