New Delhi (Sputnik) — India's Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, found herself in a tight spot as she announced the launch of a first of its kind 'women and cyber-crime' cell under her ministry. In a tweet, Gandhi called upon women to email her their complaints if they were being abused or trolled online. However, this resulted in Gandhi being trolled herself.
Critics made a number of personal remarks in a clear attempt to troll her.

One tweet opened a three-decade-old controversial issue involving Maneka Gandhi.
Meanwhile, in a high profile meeting held with Twitter, Facebook and Delhi Police officials on Friday, officials of the ministry tried to find ways to address the issue of harassment of women and children on social media platforms.

The Ministry for Women and Child Development said, "Ever since this message was sent out, the Ministry has been receiving a large number of complaints. The entire issue has been discussed in detail in light of the nature of complaints."
The Ministry has decided that if any woman or child is at the receiving end of violent threats, inciting or enraging targeted abuse or harassment on social media, they should report the same to the Ministry.
Complaints received by the Ministry will be reported to Twitter India for necessary action. However it is not clear how police will take action against trolls. The Ministry says, "Wherever required, the Ministry will also be working with the cyber-crime cell of the police."
