Ex-Chief of Volkswagen Korea Summoned by Prosecutor Over Emissions Scandal
05:59 GMT 08.07.2016 (Updated: 09:30 GMT 08.07.2016) A former managing director of Volkswagen in South Korea, Park Dong-hoon, was summoned on Friday by the local prosecutor's office for the second time over allegations regarding the company's irregularities amid the emissions scandal surrounding the manufacturer, media reported.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — In September, US environmental protection authorities accused Volkswagen of installing software in their automobiles worldwide that falsifies diesel engine emissions tests. Volkswagen chief executive Martin Winterkorn admitted to the company's wrongdoing, and quickly resigned.
According to the Yonhap news agency, Park was summoned for questioning on his alleged involvement in the company's use of software that allowed it to cheat on emissions tests.
The official was also reportedly summoned on Tuesday as a material witness, but after the questioning his status was changed to the status of a suspect. Prosecutors banned Park from leaving the country.
Following the Tuesday questioning, Park denied either his involvement in the emissions scandal in or knowledge of any related manipulation.
Park was Volkswagen Korea's managing director between 2005 and 2013, and then moved to the local Renault Samsung Motors Co. According to media reports, the prosecutors are expected to summon Johannes Thammer, the current chief of the Volkswagen Korea, in the near future.
