The death of a resident of the US state of Utah last month is the first Zika virus-related fatality in the continental United States, the Salt Lake County Health Department said in a news release on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Friday, US media reported that the victim was an elderly woman, but the health department noted that the person’s gender has not yet been released.

According to the statement, there is currently no Zika virus infection threat to the residents from mosquitos in the area.

"[A Salt Lake County] resident infected with [the] Zika virus died in late June," the release stated. "The deceased individual, who was elderly and had an underlying health condition, had traveled earlier this year to an area of the world where mosquitos are known to spread the Zika virus."

The individual tested positive for the Zika virus, but the health department explained that the exact cause of death has not been determined.

Moreover, it may not be possible to determine exactly how the Zika virus contributed to their death, it added.

The presence of Zika in the United States has thus far been limited to travelers returning from other nations and their sexual partners. However, the virus has been being transmitted by mosquitoes in at least 60 nations, more than half in the Americas, according to international health officials.
