MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The petition for a second referendum was launched the day when the UK vote to leave was announced. At the moment, over 4.1 million people signed it. According to the UK law, Parliament considers all petitions that get more than 100,000 votes for a debate.
"The Prime Minister and Government have been clear that this [Brexit] was a once in a generation vote and, as the Prime Minister has said, the decision must be respected. We must now prepare for the process to exit the EU and the Government is committed to ensuring the best possible outcome for the British people in the negotiations," the government said in a statement.
On June 23, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.
