BAKU (Sputnik) — Nagorno-Karabakh is the Azerbaijan's Armenian-dominated breakaway region. Armenia's President Serzh Sargsyan and Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev separately met with US Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday, on the margins of the NATO summit in the Polish capital.

Nagorno-Karabakh proclaimed its independence in 1991. After the military conflict ended in 1994, Azerbaijan lost control over the region.
Since 1992, the negotiations on the peaceful settlement of the conflict are taking place within the OSCE Minsk Group. Azerbaijan insists on preserving its territorial integrity, while Armenia claims it protects the interests of the breakaway republic, as Karabakh is not a party to the negotiations.
