MOSCOW (Sputnik) — US agencies, including the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security, approved the transfer of Fayiz Ahmad Yahia Suleiman from the infamous prison in 2009.
According to the statement, the United States is grateful to the Italian government of Italy for its “humanitarian gesture” and willingness to support the US efforts to close the so called Gitmo. Currently, 78 detainees remain in the detention center, the statement added.
Closing the detention center at Guantanamo Bay has been an administration priority since Barack Obama became the US president in 2009. US officials have maintained that the facility represents a national security risk to the United States as that it is used in terrorist propaganda.
