MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Outgoing UK Prime Minister David Cameron said Monday he would officially step down on Wednesday, July 13, with Home Secretary Theresa May becoming the next leader of the country.
Cameron announced his resignation anticipated this fall after his campaign to keep the United Kingdom a member of the European Union lost 52-48 percent in a June 23 referendum. Earlier on Monday, May became the only candidate to head the UK Conservative Party and to become the country’s new prime minister after her rival Andrea Leadsom withdrew her candidacy.
"I’m also delighted that Theresa May will be the next prime minister… On Wednesday I will attend the House of Commons for prime minister’s questions. And then after that I expect to go to the Palace and offer my resignation, so we will have a new prime minister in that building behind me by Wednesday evening," Cameron said in a statement.
