LONDON (Sputnik) — London Mayor Sadiq Khan is expected to hold a meeting with EU ambassadors on Tuesday to reassure that Europeans living in the UK capital are always welcome here, the UK governmental press service said.
"I’ve invited European Ambassadors based here in London to City Hall to send a crystal-clear message that all EU citizens living in London — who make a huge contribution to our city — are very welcome here… I’m calling on Theresa May to say very clearly now that she will guarantee that EU citizens who were living here before the referendum can remain," Khan is expected to say during the meeting, as quoted by the press service.
UK Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom earlier said that EU citizens would need work permits to reside in the United Kingdom after Brexit. Leadsom added that if she became a prime minister she would deprive new entrants of the right to stay in United Kingdom.
As outgoing UK Prime Minister David Cameron announced his resignation after the Brexit vote, Home Secretary Theresa May became last week the only candidate to head the UK Conservative Party and to become the country’s new prime minister after Leadsom withdrew her candidacy. Cameron is expected to resign on July 13.
